Age of Empires (AoE) is a history-based real-time strategy video game developed by Ensemble Studios and published by Microsoft, and the first game in the Age of Empires series. The game uses the Genie Engine, a 2D sprite-based game engine. The game allows the user to act as the leader of an ancient civilization by advancing it through four ages (the Stone, Tool, Bronze, and Iron Ages), gaining access to new and improved units with each advance.

Originally touted as Civilization meets Warcraft, some reviewers felt that the game failed to live up to these expectations when it was released. Despite this, it received generally good reviews, and an expansion pack, titled The Rise of Rome, was released in 1998. Both the original Age of Empires and the expansion pack were later released as 'The Gold Edition'. A sequel, Age of Empires II, was released in 1999. Age of Empires: Definitive Edition, a remastered version of the game, was released on February 20, 2018.

Gameplay

Age of Empires requires the player to develop a civilization from a handful of hunter-gatherers to an expansive Iron Age Empire. To assure victory, the player must gather resources in order to pay for new units, buildings and more advanced technology. Resources must be preserved, as no new resources become available as the game progresses; for example, trees that are cut down will not grow back.

Twelve civilizations are available, each with individual sets of attributes, including a varying number of available technologies and units. Each civilization has technologies unique to them, so that no civilization possesses all the technologies possible within the game.

A major component of the game is the advancement through four ages. These are the Stone Age (Mesolithic/Nomad/Paleolithic), the Tool Age (Neolithic/Chalcolithic), the Bronze Age and the Iron Age. Advancement between ages is researched at the Town Center, and each advancement brings the player new technologies, weapons, and units.

Development

Age of Empires (under the working title Dawn of Man) was the first game developed by Ensemble Studios. Its historical setting was chosen to be more plausible and accessible, particularly to casual gamers, than existing games. At the time, other real-time strategy games had science fiction and fantasy settings, so the historical setting of Age of Empires enabled it to stand out. The designers received much of their inspiration from the game Civilization, with its proven historical setting; this was noted among reviewers as something positive. The game was announced in June 1996 at the Electronic Entertainment Expo. Age of Empires was designed by Bruce Shelley, Tony Goodman (in charge of the game's artwork), and Dave Pottinger (in charge of the game's artificial intelligence). Stephen Rippy was the music director (a role he kept through the series), with occasional help from his brother, David Rippy, as well as Kevin McMullan. He created the original music in Age of Empires using sounds from actual instruments from the periods in the game, as well as their digital samples. While many Age of Empires and real-time strategy fans wait eagerly for the sequel due out sometime next year, Ensemble Studios', in the meantime, have graced us with a good quality expansion pack which adds that extra touch of variety to the original title. There's really not a whole lot to 'review' in Rise of Rome, as the new features list is the perfect summation as to what you get for your money. They are as follows:

Four new civilizations: Cathaginian, Macedonian, Palmyran, and (of course) Roman.- Five new units: Armored Elephant, Camel Rider, Fire Galley, Scythe Chariot and Slinger.- Four new technologies (or 'researchable upgrades'): Logistics, Martyrdom, Medicine and Tower Shield.- Four new campaigns- Four new map types: Continental, Mediterranean, Hill Country and Narrows.- New Roman tileset- A number of miscellaneous interface upgrades and added options including:
- queued unit building
- double-clicking selects all units of that type on screen
- new 'Gigantic' map size for skirmishes
- can choose 'random civilization' in skirmish games
- can jump instantly to the portion of screen relevant to the last sound cue (eg. an attack warning)
- allied Town Centers are visible when you begin allied multiplayer gamers (still no option to 'share vision' without having to research it though - boo!)
- customizable population limit in multi games.

Hopefully, many AOE owners will have already upgraded to at least 1.0a in the past, as that patch drastically altered many AI and path-finding issues which would have severely marred your enjoyment of the game had you played it through with version 1.0. If you haven't patched AOE in the past, then this expansion will really breathe new life into the game!

The 'bulk' of the expansion pack is undoubtedly the extra units and upgrades available. While five additional units could be considered a somewhat stingy amount, the new unit types do actually force a change in your strategic thinking. Ensemble were obviously addressing criticisms with multiplay in the original game where the cavalry units tended to be the most powerful and were often favored over the other alternatives (specifically infantry). The new camel rider evens the balance somewhat as it sports a high damage advantage over cavalry but none on infantry (which, along with their fast speed, was the cavalry's ace card). So this new unit implements a distinct paper-rock-scissors formula which was previously missing.

The other low-level unit is the slinger. Judging by his statistics, he has been brought into the fray to defend against early missile attacks from archers or guard towers - he scores both extra damage against range units plus extra armor against missile attacks. Again, another unit brought in to balance out the 'rushers'. Remaining new units are all only available in the Iron Age, so they're basically the extras to make the high-tech battles more interesting and diverse.

Once you’re done click OK and then click close on the bottom of the menu. Now if you click the Steve face your minecraft name should appear on that list, click on it.

Step 5: Creating An Instance

Now before you can play the Modpacks you need to create an instance. Click on the piece of paper with a star on top (Top left).

It should open a menu, give this instance a name (Normally what the modpacks is called) so for example i’m going to call it my Modpack (Refuge). Also check what Minecraft version the pack is, currently most Modpacks are 1.7.10. My Modpacks (Refuge) is 1.7.10 so i’m going to select 1.7.10 by clicking the box next where it says ‘Version’ and selecting 1.7.10, then click OK.

You can change the icon by clicking the infinity logo. After everything is correct click OK.

Step 6: Installing Forge

Then instance should start to get the files from Mojang, after that’s done right click the instance and click ‘Edit Instance’. It should bring up a window, click the button on the side called ‘Install Forge’. All the latest forge versions for your selected Minecraft version should show up, have a look on the Modpack you want to installs Curse page it should tell you the Forge version Mac/ Linux need to use to be able to play the pack. After you find that out select the version stated on the Modpacks page, then click OK for me it’s for 10.13.3.1391. It should get the Forge files, then click close.

Step 7: Installing The Pack

Once you have done step 6, download the Modpack files they should be on the Modpack you want to downloads Curse page. After downloading the files open the zip up and locate to where you see a folder called mods there will probably have more folders as well.

Select them all a copy the files, we will be pasting them in a moment. Go back onto MultiMC, right click the instance and select ‘Instance Folder’. It should open up a file explorer, open the folder inside called ‘minecraft’ delete everything inside. After deleting everything inside the ‘minecraft’ folder paste the files we copied from the Modpack files we downloaded before.

Step 8: Playing Minecraft

Go back onto MultiMC and double click on the instance (that should start to load up minecraft) and Voila, you have successfully installed a Modpack.
